Home Video releases of The Goodies Television Series
This page lists all known VHS tapes, DVDs, and digital releases of The Goodies in the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States. Entries are listed by release date. In cases where the same set of episodes were released in the UK and Australia information is provided about differences between the two versions.
Also included on this site is a page showing releases by country, an abbreviated list with only basic information such as release date, catalog numbers, and episodes. That page is intended as a quick reference and, for that reason, doesn't provide details such as specifics about bonus features (as can be found on the current page.
The Goodies (VHS)
Thorn EMI Video – TVB 90 1006 2
PAL Format
Released 1982. 99 minutes.
This video contains four episodes from The Goodies LWT series (series 9): Football Crazy, Robot, Big Foot, and Change of Life.
The episodes have a few edits, mostly to remove the “end of part one” and “part two” captions. A few bits of music such as the Robot singing "Funky Gibbon") have also been edited out, presumably due to music clearance issues.
The Goodies (VHS)
The Video Collection – VC 6008
Released in Australia as Thorn/EMI ZL 4 031
PAL format
Released 1986. 50 minutes
This is a repackaged budget version of the Thorn EMI Video above. This contains two of the four episodes from the earlier release, the LWT episodes Football Crazy and Change of Life.
These are the same versions of
the episodes (containing the same edits) as the earlier tape.
Kitten Kong (VHS)
BBC Video:
Initially released in 1994 as BBCV 5391
Reissued on 2April 1997 as BBCV 5829
Released in Australia as ABC Video 17884
PAL format
86 minutes
Contains the episodes Kitten Kong, Scatty Safari, and Scoutrageous.
The original packaging has an excerpt from the book The Goodies
File (about the Goodies’ trandem) on the inside of the case. In the budget series reissue (BBCV 5829) this artwork was replaced by an ad for other BBC Video titles.
All versions of this tape contain edits in the episode Scatty Safari as documented in Matthew K. Sharp’s “Goodies Episode Guide”:
-
Two tiny cuts in the montage of stars at the beginning to remove the clips of Dick Emery and Marty Feldman which had been lifted from their own series.
-
There is an awkward fade-out/fade-in in the first studio scene at the stables to remove an excerpt on the soundtrack of, I think, an Osmond, and Bill throwing a bucket of water over him.
-
Most stupidly, in the closing scenes, when the Rolf Harrises are lead over to "the other side", instead of the door reading "A.T.V.", it has been amended with a disticntly dodgy video graphic to read "ITV". This is particularly noticeable since whilst the film camera or the door were slightly unsteady and wobble slightly, the ITV caption remains rock steady.
The Goodies and the Beanstalk (VHS & Beta)
BBC Video: BBCV 7008 (VHS), BBCB 7008 (Beta)
PAL format
Released 1983. 44 minutes
This was one of the BBC’s first home video releases. It contains only one Goodies episode, The Goodies and the Beanstalk.
Unfortunately this title didn’t sell well, probably due to the
high cost for a single episode and the small number of consumers with home video players at that time. Because of the poor sales it would be 11 years before the BBC released further Goodies episodes on video.
The Goodies and the Beanstalk (VHS)
BBC Video:
Initially released in 1994 as BBCV 5370
Reissued on 26 Feb 1996 as BBCV 5830
Released in Australia as ABC Video B00100
PAL format
100 minutes
Contains the episodes The Goodies and the Beanstalk, The End, and The Bunfight at the O.K. Tearooms.
The original packaging has an excerpt from the book The Goodies File (titled “Who Are The Goodies”) on the inside of the case. In the budget series reissue (BBCV 5830) this artwork was replaced by an ad for other BBC Video titles.
The Australian version of this tape contains an edit in the episode The End consisting of two lines of dialog (as documented in the Matthew K. Sharp’s “The Goodies - Censored!”:
* At 8'34", the following section in italics has been cut. CUT = 0'04"
TBT: ...and I know that I've not been easy to live with.
BO: No he hasn't. That's absolutely correct, he hasn't, you know.
TBT: Pay no attention to him. He's pissed.
GG: Oh, has he?
TBT: Yes. Graeme? Graeme? Graeme? You don't... you don't mind me calling you Graeme, do you, 'cos you're the only friend I've got in the whole world...

UK Release
Scoutrageous, and Punky Business.
Bonus features include commentaries on three episodes (The Movies, South Africa, & The End), the Gymnasium sketch from A Collection of Goodies, Crackerjack clip (of The Goodies singing “A Man’s Best Friend is His Duck”), Goodies Christmas Night with the Stars 1972 clip (aka The Goodies Traveling Instant Five-Minute Christmas).
Originally intended to be the Australian version of “The Goodies – At Last A Second Helping”. However, the Australian set went into production before mastering of the UK set was finished (to ensure it would be available in time for the Goodies live shows in Australia starting 4 March 2005). Due to this the Australian set is missing some of the special features included in the UK set, specifically the colour version of Come Dancing, the restoration featurette, The Goodies in Conversationfeaturette, the commemorative booklet and the original script PDFs.
Differences: The Australian set does not have these special features which are included in the UK set:

the colour version of Come Dancing (the set does have a black & white copy of the episode)
-
a restoration featurette
-
The Goodies in Conversation featurette

The Goodies – At Last A Second Helping (DVD)
PAL Region 2. 2 disks.

Released 14 Feb 2005. 240 minutes
Contains the digitally restored episodes Radio Goodies, Come Dancing, The Movies, South Africa, Bunfight at the OK Tearooms, The End, Scoutrageous, and Punky Business.
The episode Come Dancing, long thought to exist only in black & white, is included in this collection as a colour version obtained from computer restoration on a recently discovered low-band colour version. Because of this, the colour in this episode is of a lower quality than of other episodes in this collection (though the picture quality is excellent).
Bonus features include commentaries on three episodes (The Movies, South Africa, & The End), the Gymnasium sketch from A Collection of Goodies, Crackerjack clip (of The Goodies singing “A Man’s Best Friend is His Duck”), Goodies Christmas Night with the Stars 1972 clip (aka The Goodies Traveling Instant Five-Minute Christmas), commemorative booklet, restoration featurette, The Goodies in Conversation featurette, and original script PDFs.

Because of this, The Tasty Tin DOES NOT include all the bonus features available in The Tasty Box. Please see the listings above for additional details.
The metal tin itself is a nice collectible, given its colorful graphics. However, if you only want to buy one Australian DVD box with as many bonus features as possible The Tasty Box would be a better choice.

Australian Release - PAL Region 4. 4 disks.
ABC Video – B01031-9

Episodes). However, disks 3 & 4 contain items that were missing from the second Australian set, A Tasty Second Helping but which were included in the UK version of the release, such as a color version of the Come Dancing episode and a booklet.
Instead of recycling packing from the earlier Australian sets, entirely new artwork was created for The Tasty Box. An outer cardboard case contains a single insert, which folds out to reveal the 4 DVDs plus the same booklet that came with the UK release The Goodies - At Last A Second Helping.
The set contains the digitally restored episodes Tower of London, Gender Education, Kitten Kong, The Goodies and the Beanstalk, Kung Fu Kapers, Lighthouse Keeping Loonies, Earthanasia, Saturday Night Grease. Bundle includes The Goodies: The Complete BBC Collection along with two books, a CD, and a goody bag. Pre-order started 7 June 2018. Released 24 September 2018.
A Binge of Goodies announcement
On 7 June 2018 Network announced the pre-order of A Binge of Goodies, a special bundle which would be released on 24 September 2018 (the date of the general release of The Goodies: The Complete BBC Collection boxset). The special Binge set was limited to 1,000 copies; purchasers of the first 500 copies would also receive a unique certificate signed by Tim, Graeme, and Bill.
The contents of the Binge bundle were:
* the Goodies: The Complete BBC Collection [12 disc boxset]
* The Goodies DVD File, written by Andrew Pixley (an overview of Graeme, Bill and Tim's careers, beginning at Cambridge and working through to the post-Goodies era)
* The Goodies Book of Criminal Recordings, written by Andrew Pixley (an episode-by-episode analysis of the entire Goodies output, including their ITV series and an index covering commercial recordings and other endeavours)
* The Cricklewood Tapes, a three-CD set of original session recordings made for the series – including music, adverts and stings.
* a canvas goody bag with the Goodies "G" logo
A few weeks after the pre-order period began those who had been lucky enough to purchase the first 500 sets were notified via email that they would be receiving the certificate. The email read:
"There was certainly a scramble to get the first 500 copies of A Binge of Goodies, with their signed certificates. And the eggs-citing news is that you’ve struck gold... no giants, beanstalks or dive-bombing geese involved!
Yours was one of the lucky first 500 applications, so you can look forward to receiving your hand-signed certificate as part of the bag of Goodies that will be winging your way to you just as soon as Graeme’s
computer has manufactured them all.
Just spare a thought for our heroes, whose arms will be hanging off after doing all those signatures. But they did promise to do anything, anytime, didn’t they?"

Digital Only Goodies episodes
It's The Goodies
The BBC Store was a UK based Video on Demand store which launched in November 2015. A collection of 14 Goodies episodes became available for purchase (within the UK only) in digital format on 16 February 2017. The full collection sold for £19.99; individual episodes were available for purchase for £1.89 each. The BBC Press Release stated that 15 episodes would be available, although once The Goodies collection was listed on the BBC Store it only contained 14 episodes (Lighthouse Keeping Loonies being the missing episode).
Seven episodes previously had been released on DVD (Cecily, Radio Goodies, Kitten Kong (Montreux Special), The Movies, King Fu Kapers, Bunfight at the OK Tea Rooms, The End, and Earthanasia), while six episodes were available for purchase the first time (The Greenies, The Loch Ness Monster, Winter Olympics, Black Magic, Clown Virus, Animals (BBC)).
Only the episodes which had been previously released on DVD had been digitally restored, while the six newly released ones were of lower picture quality. Thankfully these - and the rest of The Goodies episodes - have since been restored by Network for the 2018 "Complete BBC Collection" DVD box set.
On 25 May 2017 the BBC announced that the BBC Store would be closed on 1 November 2017 (citing poor sales plus competition from streaming services such as Netflix) and that programs would no longer be available for purchase.
There was speculation that the BBC would gradually move programmes over to streaming service such as BritBox. As of mid-2020 Tim's pre-Goodies program At Last the 1948 Show was available on BritBox but there was no news about if or when The Goodies episodes would be added to that or any other digital service.
